Short notes on the Asian wine trade, written by hand from Hong Kong. Two kinds only, always labelled: an observation carries a source you can check, and a trade read is one person's judgement with their name on it. A quiet week publishes nothing.

What these notes are, and what they are not

I import and sell wine in Hong Kong, and the question I am asked most by European estates is some version of 'what does Asia actually want right now'. Most of the answers in circulation are either sales copy or a guess dressed as data. These notes separate the two on purpose: an observation carries a source you can check yourself, and a read is my own judgement with my name on it. Where the platform's own data is thin — and today it is thin — I will say so rather than fill the gap.

The attention has moved south

For a European estate deciding where to spend its export effort, Hong Kong is no longer the obvious first answer. It is a small market that is already covered by established importers. The growth conversation in the trade this year is Thailand and Vietnam, with Singapore as the regional hub it has always been. If you are choosing one market to build in, the harder question is not whether Asia — it is which Asia.
